This is a poem written by Oswald Chambers during a particularly difficult time in his life. He called that period, “The dark night of the soul.”
My soul is night
My heart is steel
I cannot see
I cannot feel
For light, for life
I must appeal
In simple faith
To Jesus
O.C.
That’s a stunning poem. I wonder if that is the root of that phrase. I have heard that before, but I have never read the poem in the past.

Oswald Chambers said that his “Dark night of the soul” was for four entire years. He almost didn’t make it through because it was so overwhelming.

I know what you mean. I can feel his agony and longing for relief.
